Growth of community foundations across the globe
(Number of foundations by year)
Explanation of chart
The number of community foundations in the year 2000 stood at 905. Ten years later the number has nearly doubled and now stands at 1,680.
In 2003, there were 1,092 community foundations, in 2004 there were 1,235, in 2005 there were 1,233, and in 2008 there were 1,400.
This trend has been remarkably stable and consistent. To measure the extent to which the trend is stable and consistent, we used a statistic called 'R Squared'. This ranges in values from 0 (which is no trend at all) to 1 (which is a perfect linear trend). In this case, the vale of R Squared is 0.96. This is a very high score, suggesting a trend that is very close to a straight line. Inspection of the chart reveals that the dots would join up in a more or less straight line were it not for the 2005 count, which shows a slight reduction on the year before.
